Diwali for Diabetics: How to Celebrate Without a Sugar Spike

Diwali means sweets on every table, snacks at every visit and gift boxes going in and out of every home. If you have diabetes, the festival can feel like a test you did not sign up for. But the problem is not Diwali. The problem is selection, choosing what to eat and what to give without knowing what it will do to your blood sugar.

During his live session, Mr. Lokendra Tomar - Founder of Diabexy, calls it 'A Mindful Diwali'. Every food you pick for yourself, and every gift you pick for someone else, should have a scientific reason behind it. This guide gives you that complete framework: why sugar rises so fast in the festive season, the one root cause behind it, the hidden trap inside sugar free sweets, and how to choose food and gifts using one simple tool called EGL.

Why Does Blood Sugar Rise So Fast During Diwali?

Start with the size of the problem. The ICMR-INDIAB study, the largest diabetes survey done in India, found that more than 11 out of every 100 Indian adults have diabetes, and more than 15 out of every 100 are prediabetic. Put together, roughly 26 out of every 100 adults in this country are walking around with blood sugar above normal.

Condition People in India Share of adults
Diabetes 101 million (10.1 crore) 11.4%
Prediabetes 136 million (13.6 crore) 15.3%

Now add the festive season on top of this. Sweets and fried snacks appear at every home you visit. Meal timings go irregular, physical activity drops, and celebrations often continue late into the night. For a population where one in four already has elevated blood sugar, Diwali without a plan almost always ends with a spike. The good news is that the spike is not caused by the festival. It is caused by what the festival food does inside your body, and that can be understood and managed.

What Is Insulin Resistance, and Why Is It the Root of Most Lifestyle Disease?

Look at the health problems around you: blood pressure, diabetes, PCOD, fatty liver, high cholesterol, weight gain, belly fat, joint pain. They look like separate diseases, but Mr. Tomar points out that around 60 percent of these problems are lifestyle related, and most of them share one common factor: insulin resistance.

His rule is simple. Insulin resistance can contribute to weight gain or obesity. It does not happen due to lack of insulin; it results from repeated episodes of excess insulin secretion for years. That extra 3 to 4 kilos, or a normal weight with a belly sticking out, is often the first visible sign that insulin resistance has already started.

This gives us a clear test for Diwali. A food is healthy if it does not increase insulin resistance. A gift is healthy if it does not increase insulin resistance. Everything else in this guide is just this one test applied to sweets, snacks and gift boxes.

Which Part of Your Food Spikes Insulin the Most?

Not all food pushes insulin equally. The three main components of food influence insulin in very different proportions:

Food component Effect on insulin What it means
Fat Approx. 5% Barely moves insulin
Protein Approx. 15% Only a minor effect
Carbohydrate Approx. 80% The main driver of insulin spikes

Read the table once and the whole Diwali strategy becomes clear. Fat barely moves insulin. Protein has only a small effect. Carbohydrate is behind roughly 80 percent of the insulin response. So the more carbohydrate a food carries, the more insulin it will demand, and the faster it will build insulin resistance. Judge every festive food by its carbohydrate and glucose load, not by the claims printed on its box.

Is Natural Always Healthy? The Jaggery, Honey and Dates Trap

Most festive guides will tell you to replace white sugar with jaggery, honey or dates and call the sweet healthy. Mr. Tomar asks you to pause and think. Is everything natural good for you? Sugarcane juice is completely natural, and it still sends blood sugar up within minutes. Natural is a description of where something comes from. It is not a health certificate.

The same trap sits inside products labelled sugar free or no added sugar. The sugar is missing, but the sweetness has to come from somewhere. Very often it comes from one of these hidden sweeteners:

What the label hides What it really is Effect on blood sugar
Maltodextrin A fast carbohydrate powder Raises blood sugar quickly
Jaggery (gud) Concentrated cane sugar Raises blood sugar like sugar
Honey A natural sugar syrup Raises blood sugar
Dates (khajoor) Concentrated fruit sugar Very high EGL, raises blood sugar fast
Coconut sugar Palm sugar Raises blood sugar

A laddoo made by pounding dates into a paste and mixing in dry fruits gets sold as a healthy laddoo. Eat it, and it will still spike your insulin and feed insulin resistance, because the dates inside it carry a very high glucose load. This is why your selection should never be based on stories or labels. It should be based on a number, and that number is EGL. Keep this in mind when you buy or make sugar free mithai this year.

What Is EGL, and How Do You Use It to Choose Diwali Food?

EGL means Estimated Glucose Load. It tells you how much glucose a food will release inside your body, measured per 100 grams of the uncooked food. A food with a high EGL will push blood sugar up a lot. A food with a low EGL will push it up very little. That is the whole idea, and it is enough to make almost every food decision this Diwali.

The Diabexy EGL Chart lists 300 plus everyday Indian foods with their EGL values, colour coded so you can see at a glance what is safe, what needs care and what is best avoided. Before you serve a sweet at home, or pack a gift box for a relative, check where its main ingredients sit on the chart. One habit, checking EGL before choosing, turns festive guesswork into a system.

One more thing Mr. Tomar insists on: do not become anyone's follower, not even ours. Become a student. Learn the parameter, test it on your own body the way this guide shows you below, and then decide for yourself. Knowledge you have verified is the only knowledge that stays with you.

Why Does a Thoughtful Gift Matter So Much at Diwali?

Gifting is thousands of years old, and it exists in every culture, not just ours. A gift builds and maintains relationships. There is an old saying that you should never visit someone's home empty handed, because the person receiving the gift feels valued. They know you thought about them. A gift starts a culture of reciprocity, it expresses appreciation, and appreciated behaviour is the behaviour that gets repeated. It also creates warm, sattvic feelings in the giver, the kind that calms the mind and reduces stress, and it leaves behind a memory that lasts for years.

Diwali is the biggest gifting season of the year. A gift is how you tell your family, friends and colleagues: you matter to me, I care about you. Now hold that thought next to the ICMR numbers. If roughly 26 out of every 100 people around you have high blood sugar, then a box of syrup soaked sweets sends the opposite message, however sweet the intention. A truly thoughtful Diwali gift for a diabetic says I care about you, and proves it by protecting their health.

Why Are Dry Fruits the Safest Diwali Gift?

Apply the insulin test to the classic Diwali gift, nuts and seeds, and see what is actually inside them:

What is inside nuts and seeds Approx. share Why it matters
Fat 45 to 50% Fat barely moves insulin
Protein 20 to 25% Keeps you full, minor insulin effect
Fibre 10 to 12% Slows down glucose release
Moisture Around 10% Natural water content
Carbohydrate Only around 10% Very little glucose to release

Do the maths. Fat takes up about half the nut, protein about a quarter, then fibre and moisture take most of what remains. Carbohydrate is left with only around 10 percent. Very little carbohydrate means very little glucose released, which means almost no insulin spike. This is why a dry fruits gift box of almonds, walnuts, cashews and pistachios, plain or roasted, is the safest gift you can give this Diwali. Branded or unbranded does not matter; you can even fill a box yourself.

There is one exception, and it matters. Dates are sold sitting right next to the nuts, but they do not behave like nuts. Their EGL is very high, and they will raise blood sugar. Keep dates out of the gift box. Everything else in the dry fruit family is welcome in healthy diwali gifts.

What Makes Diabexy Atta a Gift That Improves Health?

If you want a gift that does more than avoid harm, give something that actively helps. Regular wheat atta is about 50 EGL per 100 grams. Diabexy atta is 40 percent nuts and seeds, which changes its glucose load completely:

Atta (per 100 g) EGL value Reading
Regular wheat atta 50 High glucose load
Diabexy atta 7 Around 86% lower glucose load

Diabexy atta is a low-glucose-load atta, specially designed for diabetes management. It is India's 1st diabetes atta backed by published clinical evidence. A study published in the Journal of Mid-Life Health confirms that participants using Diabexy atta got lower HbA1c (8.5 to 6.5), lower fasting blood sugar and lower after-meal blood sugar. The study also found that many participants needed fewer diabetes medicines over time. Use Diabexy atta daily for better diabetes management.

How to Choose Food Items for Diwali?

You do not have to take anyone's word for any of this, including ours. Your glucometer will tell you the truth about any festive food in one day. Here is the self-test Mr. Tomar suggests:

  • Day 1, the doubtful food. Check your blood sugar before eating. Eat the food you are unsure about, say a jaggery laddoo, a date sweet or a market sugar free mithai. Check again after 30 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours. Write down all four readings.
  • Day 2, the control. Repeat the exact same test the next day with a handful of roasted almonds instead. Same timings, same four readings.
  • Day 3, the atta test. Do the same readings around a meal of Diabexy atta roti with sabzi, and compare them with your readings after a wheat roti meal.

Compare the three days side by side. The difference between the spiking foods and the safe foods will be sitting in your own notebook, in your own numbers. Blood sugar cannot be hidden and it cannot be argued with. This one experiment will teach you more about your body than ten lectures, and after it, you will never need anyone to tell you which Diwali foods are safe for you.

What Does a C-Peptide Value Tell You About Your Diabetes?

In the live question and answer, a viewer asked: my C-peptide is 0.9, so is my diabetes type 1 or type 2? C-peptide is a simple blood test that shows how well your pancreas is working, and Mr. Tomar explained how to read it:

C-peptide value What it suggests
Above 1 Pancreas is working well, most likely type 2 diabetes, high reversal possibility
Around 0.9 Most probably type 2 diabetes
0.5 or below Points towards type 1 diabetes; type 1 patients often show 0.1 to 0.2

He also gave the definition that matters most. Diabetes remission means keeping your blood sugar in the non-diabetic range without medicines. A strong C-peptide value means the pancreas still has the capacity to support that goal, which is exactly why protecting it from daily glucose overload, during Diwali and after, is worth the effort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if the sweet is low in glucose load. Carbohydrates drive about 80 percent of the insulin response, so a sweet built on low EGL ingredients, without jaggery, honey or dates, can fit into your Diwali. Choose sugar free diwali sweets made the Diabexy way, and keep the portion small and planned rather than grazing all evening.

No. Jaggery is still a concentrated carbohydrate, and carbohydrate drives about 80 percent of the insulin response, so a jaggery laddoo can spike blood sugar much like a sugar laddoo. Natural does not automatically mean safe for blood sugar.

The best gift for a diabetic patient is a dry fruits gift box of almonds, walnuts, cashews and pistachios, because nuts carry only about 10 percent carbohydrate and barely move insulin. For a daily use gift, Diabexy atta works even better, with an EGL of just 7 per 100 g.

Diabexy atta has an EGL of 7 per 100 g against 50 per 100 g for regular wheat atta, which is about 86 percent lower. The difference comes from its recipe: 40 percent of the atta is nuts and seeds instead of plain grain.

No, dates are the exception among dry fruits. Almonds, walnuts, cashews and pistachios carry only about 10 percent carbohydrate, but dates have a very high EGL and raise blood sugar quickly. Leave dates out of the gift box and out of festive sweets.

EGL, Estimated Glucose Load, is the amount of glucose a food releases in your body per 100 grams of that food. It predicts your blood sugar rise far better than a label, because labels can hide maltodextrin, jaggery, honey, dates and coconut sugar behind the words no added sugar.

Take 4 glucometer readings: before eating, then 30 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours after eating. Repeat the same test the next day with roasted almonds. The gap between the two sets of readings shows you exactly what that food does to your blood sugar.
