Diet Plan for Type 1 Diabetes- Foods to Eat and Avoid

Patients with type 1 diabetes are very confused about their diet plan, and food to eat and avoid and even a lot of questions are in people's minds like diet plan for type 1 diabetes, best food to eat for type 1 diabetes, how many meals should a type1 diabetic eat?

Diet Plan for diabetes

Before I tell you the Diet plan for type 1 diabetic patients let me make it clear that any diabetic patient should preferably choose food that is Low in glucose load or glycemic load. Always select low-carb food because when we consume carbohydrates, they turn into sugar in our bodies and increase our blood sugar levels.

To know the glucose load/glycemic load you can download an EGL chart from the Diabexy website and make your diet plan or else we also have a specific Diet Plan for 15 days to reverse diabetes and a Diet Plan to manage diabetes as well that you can follow.

Type 1 diabetic patients can either be overweight or underweight depending on the amount of insulin they are taking. Generally, the type 1 patient is underweight because their body is not producing insulin but if they take high amounts of insulin then they will develop insulin resistance and become overweight.

High Insulin is the prerequisite for gaining weight. In type-1 diabetes, total insulin intake per day should not be more than 30 units per day, including all types of insulin. Hence diet plans should be planned in such a manner that the insulin requirement of food is low and it provides all essential nutrients.

Hence a perfect diet plan should be balanced for Glucose load, Insulin dose, and Body mass index. The ideal BMI range is between 18 to 23.

Diet Plan for Type 1 Diabetes:

There is no particular Diabetes diet plan suggested by ADA (American diabetic association) for type 1 diabetes. Diabetic patients must ensure that their blood sugar levels are maintained within the suggested limits.

A diabetic diet should include less carbs, more green vegetables, adequate protein, and healthy fats along with low glucose load fruits. The quantity of vegetables should be higher than fruits. Diabetes patients should consume less than 50 EGL (ESTIMATED GLUCOSE LOAD) per day.

Now we know how many EGL we can have, and now the question arises what type of food to eat for diabetes, and which protein source we should eat? Let’s start with green vegetables.

Green vegetables are rich in fibre and a lot of water. Vegetables have low EGL hence they do not affect blood sugar much. Here I am providing a list of vegetables that are low EGL.

EGL CHART FOR VEGETABLES

EGL Chart for vegetables

You can not eat vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, sweetcorn, and Colocasia or Green Banana as they are High EGL and may increase your sugar level.

Daily Source of Protein

India is a country where we use flour for daily meals but all the flour made with grains has very high EGL and lower protein content. What if we can use a flour that is low in EGL and high in protein?

EGL of wheat flour is appx. 50% and has just 10% protein whereas the EGL of Diabexy atta is just 7% and contains 40% protein. So just replace your normal atta with Diabexy Sugar control atta and see the impact. You can also check its review online. It had a positive impact on all the users.

Other Protein Sources with Low EGL:

Choose your protein sources carefully because there are some sources, like pulses where protein is high, but carbs are also high. Some foods are high in protein and less in EGL.

  • Tofu

  • Egg
  • Nuts and Seeds.
  • Non-veg.

Diabexy also manufactures some low-EGL and high-protein snacks, just check them on the website.

I am based in Germany.
I must say that lot many information are not told by doctors and they hide the information so that the patients remains in dark.

This is very logical and informative.

I wish – One day in future you may get recognizance from PMO Office !!
